Tom Beer, President of SRA-Australia/New Zealand (SRA-ANZ), reports that the group’s annual conference was held in Palmerston North, New Zealand, on August 26-28, 2014, with the theme “Risk Beyond the Numbers.”
The conference was organised by Naomi Cogger of the EpiCentre at Massey University. There were 29 submitted abstracts in addition to the invited keynote talks from Peter Sandman, Tim Carpenter, Jody Lanard, Mark Burgman and Nigel French. Look for all of the presentations to be posted soon on the SRA-ANZ web site, alongside presentations from other past SRA-ANZ conferences.
In addition to their keynote talks, risk communication experts Sandman and Lanard ran a one-day workshop in Wellington on risk communication, using numerous case studies. The past Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh, was praised for her risk communication skills during the landfall of Tropical Cyclone Yasi.
The 2014 conference was organised into six themes: Biosecurity; Policy and Communication; Business and Economic Risk; Food, Climate and Epidemics; Natural Disasters; and People and animals.
The SRA-ANZ Council has decided not to hold a separate annual conference in 2015 and instead wishes to be supportive of the World Congress on Risk to be held in Singapore on 19-23 July, 2015, by treating this meeting in Singapore as constituting a simultaneous annual meeting of the SRA-ANZ. Accordingly. a session proposal has been submitted for a session titled “Managing Trans-boundary Risk in the Asia-Pacific Region.”
