Toxicologist I

Texas Commission on Environmental Quality

Austin, Texas

The Toxicology Division at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is looking for several toxicologists to join their team. This job provides the opportunity to work to protect public health and the environment in Texas, as well as to impact environmental policy at the state and national level. This full-time position involves serving as an expert for agency staff and the public concerning toxicology and risk assessment issues.
Some of the tasks include:
• Assessment of health risks associated with public/environmental exposure to toxic substances
• Analyzing air, water, and soil monitoring data for the potential to cause human health/ecological effects
• Deriving safe levels of environmental toxicants
• Diverse communication as a toxicology expert with executive management of the commission, the public, the media, other governmental agencies, state and federal legislators, and in court proceedings
• Contribution to drafting environmental rules and policy, and to influencing public health policy-making
• All of the tasks detailed above, in the context of emergency response, such as during and in the aftermath of hurricanes
We encourage applicants in the fields of toxicology, pharmacology, risk assessment or a related field (such as cancer biology, molecular carcinogenesis, biochemistry, etc). The minimum qualifications are a Master’s degree with 2 years of experience or a PhD. This job involves a substantial amount of writing and communication at many levels (to the general public, other toxicologists, legislators, other employees in the agency), so very good communication skills are required. The TCEQ cannot sponsor Visas.
