The National University of Singapore is recruiting a Deputy Director for the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk (LRFIPUR), National University of Singapore (NUS). Founded in 1905, NUS is consistently ranked among the world’s top 30 universities and Asia’s top 2 universities. It is an innovative, research-intensive university with over 36,000 students from 100 countries. 


Established in 2016, LRFIPUR is the first of its kind in Asia and aspires to become a world leading centre of excellence that will inspire the public understanding of risk in Asia and globally. The Institute will undertake independent research and education, building connections with practical end-users such as policy makers, decision makers and opinion formers in governments, industry sectors, regulators, the media and the general public. It will be multi-disciplinary, spanning engineering, statistics, sociology, and psychology, including the application of big-data analytics to on-line data sources to better understand public attitudes and anxieties around everyday risks. 

This Institute aims be a magnet attracting top international risk-related experts for cross-learning and collaboration that will develop into a renowned global institution for global risk understanding. The direction, priorities and output of the Institute will be independent in order to earn public credibility. It will also provide objective commentary on hot topics surrounding the popular understanding of risk. The Institute will generate new understanding and develop new tools and approaches applied to enhancing the public understanding of risk and promoting communication between all stakeholders in society. 

Deputy Director 

The Institute seeks to hire a world-renowned scholar or industry expert in a relevant field to be its Deputy Director. Successful applicants should have proven experience and a strong track record in running similar-sized international, multidisciplinary programmes on the scale intended for the Institute. The appointment of Deputy Director is a full-time position with generous support for research and outreach activities. 

The Deputy Director will support the Director and be part of the Institute’s management board, which works in consultation with the Institute’s Governing Board to provide leadership in research, education and outreach. He or she should be a visionary and energetic leader who is capable of building international connections.
