Metro NY/NJ/CT SRA Sponsors Seminar at Columbia, Makes Award

This April 18, 2013, event attracted two dozen scholars interested in risk issues, about a fourth of them Columbia University students – including one who received a special award.

Halei Zhu, an MPH student at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, was awarded a one-year SRA membership.

The seminar focused on “Public Health Risks and Private Initiatives”; speakers at the event, held at the Columbia University Alumni Center, included Rae Zimmerman, NYU professor and past president of SRA, plus risk analysis specialists Thomas Lewis (Louis Berger Group), Vincent Collucio (risk consultant), and Mark Brownstein (Environmental Defense Fund).

Rao Kolluru, SRA Metro president, served as moderator. He is shown in the photo above, along with Ms. Zhu, who helped organize the event and is studying healthcare management at Columbia. Zhu has an MA in marketing and a BS in economics, both from Peking University.

“Halei impressed me with her understanding of both science and culture,” commented Dr. Kolluru, when asked why Zhu was chosen for the award.

The seminar began with a moment’s silence for the recent Boston Marathon events, after which Kolluru led the group in a “mindfulness” exercise.

Participants expressed enthusiasm for the prospect of future follow-on events.
